| Creating Video that looks great
on small mobile screens, and doesn't drain the battery.
Creating video for small screen devices has extra challenges
to those made for web pages.
- It needs to look good on a small screen
- It needs to be small enough in file size not to drain
resources and battery
- It needs to be viewable across several platforms
Over 200 million people have mobile phones, but only 5 million
subscribe to some kind of video service. Will this change
with the rollout of Apple iPhone, it remains to be seen.
Google's YouTube is certainly expecting so. Recently YouTube
launched its mobile video content portal YouTube
Mobile, and it in the process of converting its total
current video catalog from Flash format to H.264 3GPP video
standard.
Shooting Mobile Content
Whether you are creating video solely for a mobile device
or for a cross-platform campaign, you need to consider:
- Use standard definition video - looks fine on mobile screens.
- Mobile content is short and often episodic; with several
episodes shot over a day or two.
- Keep establishing shots simple
- Use lots of close-up shots - keep the image clear and
simple
- If you intend on creating two versions; one for broadband
and one for mobile, get more long shots for broadband.
- Avoid heavy pans or movement - on a small screen can
turn into an indecipherable blur.
- Audio quality is crucial - it helps overcome the lack
of visual size.
- Edit clips to under four minutes. If you need to go longer,
create a second episode.
